Wine of the Week: Tropical Sangria

Wine of the Week: Tropical Sangria

Pour it cold. Add fresh fruit. Watch the pitcher empty.

Tropical Sangria has been on our shelf for years, and it earns its keep every summer. Sweet, fruity, and designed to be poured over ice with fresh fruit floating in the glass -- it's a wine that treats the drinker like a host, not a wine student. This week, it's the bottle we want you to try.

What It Is

Tropical Sangria is a sweet, fruit-forward wine with a tropical profile. Bright citrus and warm tropical notes on the palate, with a finish that stays fruity instead of sticky. It's ready to drink straight from the bottle -- but the sweet spot is pouring it over ice with fresh fruit and letting it become a full sangria pitcher.

ABV: 12%

Sweetness: sweet -- one of the sweeter pours on our shelf

Flavor notes: bright citrus, tropical fruit, a fruity finish

Best served: chilled, over a big ice cube, with fresh fruit

Why It Works

The pitcher does the work for you

Most sweet wines take some effort to turn into a sangria. Tropical Sangria doesn't. Pour the bottle into a pitcher with sliced citrus and a handful of berries or pineapple, chill for ten minutes, and pour over ice. The wine has already handled the sangria math.

It shines cold, over ice

In Kentucky summer heat, this is one of the wines we most consistently point people toward for pouring over ice. Use one big ice cube if you can -- it slows the dilution, keeps the pour cold, and lets the fruit flavor stay forward.

It doubles as a spritz

Two-thirds Tropical Sangria plus a splash of lemon-lime sparkling water plus one big ice cube gives you a summer spritz in under a minute. Bright, fizzy, and light enough to sip through an afternoon.

How to Serve It

Chill it well -- at least 30-40 minutes in the fridge, or serve well chilled Pour over one big ice cube -- it lightens the pour without watering out the flavor In a stemless wine glass or a rocks glass -- whatever's in the cabinet

Add fresh fruit -- citrus, berries, pineapple, mango. Any or all

Let it breathe for a couple of minutes after opening -- the aromas come up with a quick rest

The 5-Minute Tropical Sangria Pitcher: pour 1 bottle of Tropical Sangria into a pitcher. Add a handful of sliced citrus (orange, lime, lemon), a handful of berries, and a few pineapple chunks if you've got them. Chill for 10 minutes. Pour over ice with a spoonful of the fruit in each glass. For extra fizz, top each glass with a splash of sparkling water. Done.

What to Pair It With

Cookout food -- burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, corn on the cob

Brunch spread -- fruit salad, pastries, French toast, quiche

Cheese board -- fresh mozzarella, brie, goat cheese, mild cheddar

Sweet-and-spicy anything -- Hawaiian pizza, sweet chili chicken, mango salsa Dessert -- fruit tarts, cheesecake, tres leches cake, coconut cream pie

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tropical Sangria actually a sangria?

Not in the traditional "red wine + brandy + fruit" sense -- Tropical Sangria is a wine on its own, made from fresh fruit and fruit juice with a tropical, sangria-inspired flavor profile. But it's designed to work beautifully as the base of a real sangria pitcher, which is where a lot of our customers use it.

How do I make a sangria pitcher with Tropical Sangria?

Pour 1 bottle into a pitcher. Add sliced citrus, berries, and pineapple chunks. Chill 10 minutes for the fruit to steep. Pour over ice with a spoonful of fruit per glass. For a spritz version, top each glass with sparkling water.

Is Tropical Sangria sweet?

Yes -- it's one of the sweeter pours on our shelf. Bright and fruit-forward on the front of the palate, with a finish that stays fruity instead of sticky. 12% ABV.

Can I drink Tropical Sangria over ice?

Yes -- we recommend it, especially in summer. Use one big ice cube to slow the dilution. The natural fruit and acidity hold up to a little ice without stripping the flavor.

How should I serve Tropical Sangria?

Cold, over one big ice cube, with fresh fruit in the glass. Or turn it into a full sangria pitcher by adding sliced citrus, berries, and pineapple to the whole bottle and chilling for ten minutes before pouring. For a spritz, add a splash of lemon-lime sparkling water on top.

What food pairs with Tropical Sangria?

Cookout food, brunch spreads, cheese boards, sweet-and-spicy dishes, and fruit-forward desserts. It's a versatile pairing wine because the sweet-tropical profile plays nicely with a lot of summer food.
