A Kentucky Wine Weekend: 9 Wineries Worth Planning Around 

Kentucky now counts 81 wineries by VinePair's 2026 tally -- one of the few state wine industries growing while the national count contracts. Here are nine we'd send you to, grouped into three routes so you can actually plan a weekend around them.

There isn't one single statewide Kentucky wine trail. What Kentucky has instead is a handful of regional trails -- Western Kentucky, Bullitt County's Wine, Whiskey & Ale Trail, the Bluegrass, Northern Kentucky Back Roads -- plus small family wineries tucked between them. We've included Purple Toad on this list because we're proud of what we make, but the goal here is to point you at eight other Kentucky wineries worth knowing. Every winery's win is the industry's win. 

Route 1 

Western Kentucky: Paducah → Benton → Fancy Farm 

The easiest full-day loop in far Western Kentucky. Three wineries within a comfortable drive, each with a completely different personality -- a full-scale tasting room, a small-production wine club, and a European-varietal family farm.

1. Purple Toad Winery & Distillery -- Paducah

Our original tasting room and the natural starting point in Western Kentucky. Sweet-and-approachable wines (Cotton Candy, Tropical Sangria) alongside our flagship Black and Bruised -- a structured blackberry-and-Concord blend with real tannins and balanced acidity. 2. Poca Terra Winery -- Benton

About 45 minutes east of Paducah. Poca Terra is small-production with a robust wine club and a distinct bird-themed lineup (Black Raven, Golden Eagle, Red-Winged Blackbird). They're seasonal, so plan for spring through fall Fridays and Saturdays -- but wines are available by phone, online, or pickup year-round if you want to grab a bottle outside their tasting-room window.

3. Fancy Farm Vineyard & Winery -- Fancy Farm
115 Hayden Street, Fancy Farm · Open Friday-Sunday 

About 30 minutes southwest of Paducah. Tom Curtsinger is a fourth-generation Fancy Farm landowner who planted six acres of European grape varietals -- Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Malbec, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Riesling -- on family ground in far Western Kentucky. This is the Kentucky wine story most people don't expect: European varietals grown and vinified on a small family farm in the Commonwealth.

Route 2 

Bowling Green Area: Two Stops, One Afternoon 

The easiest short-drive pairing in the state. Two family wineries about twenty minutes apart, both open enough hours a week that you don't have to plan around a small tasting-room window.

5. Reid's Livery Winery -- Alvaton

A family-run Kentucky winery about twenty minutes from our Bowling Green flagship. The Reids operate the winery themselves, which means when you visit you're almost always meeting the family that made the wine. Great pair with our flagship if you want a proper Bowling Green wine afternoon.

Route 3 

Bourbon + Wine Day Trips (Bluegrass Region) 

Kentucky is the only place you can hit a working winery and a major bourbon distillery in the same afternoon. Two natural pairings in the central-Kentucky Bluegrass, plus two additional Bluegrass-area wineries worth adding to a weekend.

That location makes it the classic Kentucky wine-and-bourbon pairing -- one winery visit, one distillery visit, one afternoon. 7. Equus Run Vineyards & Saddlestone Distillery -- Midway (with Woodford Reserve)

38 acres along South Elkhorn Creek in horse country. Equus Run runs both a working vineyard and Saddlestone Distillery on the same property, plus regular concerts, dinner theatre, and a renovated tobacco barn that hosts weddings. Pair it with a visit to Woodford Reserve nearby for the full Bluegrass-Kentucky wine-country day.

8. Ghost Fox Winery -- Nicholasville

Opened in 2023, veteran-owned, and one of the more distinctive newer stops in central Kentucky. Small-batch wines with, in their words, "a sense of spirit, curiosity, and adventure." Bottles are also stocked at Liquor Barn locations across central Kentucky if the weekend tasting-room window doesn't work.

9. 1922 House Vineyards & Winery -- Jessamine County
Jessamine County, KY · Saturdays 12-6 p.m., no reservations needed 

A small farm winery named for the 1922 farmhouse on the property. Every wine is 100% Kentucky Proud -- made from Kentucky-grown grapes and crafted on-site. Lineup spans dry reds (Norton, Chambourcin), semi-sweets, dessert wines, and a growing bourbon-barrel-aged program. A good pick if dry Kentucky reds are what you're after.

One More Worth Mentioning 

J&H Farm and Winery -- Vine Grove 
Flaherty Road, Vine Grove · Veteran-owned, working-farm hours 

A veteran-owned Kentucky winery just outside Fort Knox. J&H keeps things intimate -- the kind of place where you'll usually meet the people who made the wine. Their Pink Catawba took Silver at the 2024 Kentucky Commonwealth Commercial Wine Competition. Call ahead for hours, as they operate on a working-farm schedule. Doesn't fit neatly on the three routes above, but worth the stop if you're near Fort Knox or Louisville.

A Few Notes Before You Go 

• Call ahead. Many Kentucky wineries are small operations with seasonal or reservation-based hours.

• Pair with bourbon. Bullitt County (Forest Edge + Jim Beam) and Woodford County (Equus Run + Woodford Reserve) are the two easiest wine-and-bourbon pairings in the state. 

• Check tasting fees. Most Kentucky wineries offer complimentary or low-fee tastings, but confirm before you go. 

• Buy a bottle. The most useful thing you can do for a growing local industry is bring one bottle home from every stop.
