The 4th of July Cookout Guide: Wine and Bourbon for the Big Day
Share
Saturday, July 4. Fire up the grill, chill the wine, and let the fireworks handle the rest.
This is the guide you skim on your way to the grocery store. Three sections: a plate-by-plate pairing chart, a red-white-and-purple drink cart, and a Kentucky bourbon note for after dinner. All Kentucky-made, all built to work in Kentucky heat.
Section 1: Plate-by-Plate Pairing Chart
Every cookout ends up with a spread that runs from smoked meats to potato salad to somebody's aunt's cheesecake. You don't need one wine for all of it. You need the right wine for each part.

On the Plate |
Pour |
Why It Works |
|
Burgers and hot dogs |
Black and Bruised |
Our flagship blackberry and Concord grape blend. Dark fruit and body stand up to smoke and char |
|
Brisket, ribs, pulled pork |
Black and Bruised |
Dark fruit, acidity, and body hold up to smoke, char, and BBQ sauce |
|
Grilled chicken, kabobs |
Killer B's or Peach |
Lighter proteins want a lighter pour. Both cover it |
|
Corn on the cob, potato salad, pasta salad |
Cotton Candy or Tropical Sangria |
Sweet, casual, easy. Sides don't need a big wine |
|
Coleslaw, pickles, sharp cheese |
Killer B's |
Citrus and acid balance the vinegar and salt |
|
Watermelon, berries, fruit salad |
Peach or Killer B's |
Fruit echoes fruit. The easiest possible pairing |
|
Cheesecake, berry cobbler, ice cream |
Cotton Candy or Lauren's Blackberry |
Sweet on sweet without competition. Dessert done right |
Two non-negotiables no matter what's on the plate: (1) let the wine breathe for 5-10 minutes after you pop the cork -- there's a real flavor difference. (2) In Kentucky July heat, pour over a single big ice cube. Our wines have the structure to hold up to ice without washing out.
Section 2: The Red, White & Purple Toad Lineup If you want the drink cart to match the flag, here's the easy version:
|
Color |
Pour |
Serve With |
|
Red |
Black and Bruised or Lauren's Blackberry |
Fresh berries in the glass, ice cube, brisket on the side |
|
Light / Golden |
Killer B's or Peach |
Lemon garnish, chilled hard, pours over ice |
|
Blue |
Blueberries in Cotton Candy |
A handful of fresh blueberries in a Cotton Candy pour turns it "blue" |
|
Bonus: Purple |
Black and Bruised over ice |
The name says it all. Deep purple-red, ice cube, done |
|
Party trick: layer a red-white-and-blue cocktail in a wine glass. Pour Cotton Candy over ice, add a handful of fresh blueberries, top with a splash of chilled lemon-lime sparkling water and a strawberry on the rim. Looks like a fireworks show, drinks like a summer party. |
Section 3: A Kentucky Bourbon for After Dinner
For a slower after-dinner pour, set out one bourbon option with measured pours, plenty of water on the side, and a designated driver plan for anyone who's driving home. Our Kentucky-made bourbon and whiskey lineup -- from our Kentucky Bourbon Trail® stop in Paducah -- covers most after-dinner situations with one or two bottles.
The easy sipper
6 Year Small Batch (92 proof). Smooth, approachable, works neat or over one big ice cube. The pour for a small group who wants to sip slowly.
The upgrade
Double Oaked 11 Year (94 proof). The bottle most bourbon enthusiasts will recognize on sight. Caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak. Best neat, best slow, best late in the evening.
The cocktail base
Peach Whiskey (80 proof). Cocktail-friendly and summer-friendly. A Peach Old Fashioned or a peach whiskey lemonade builds a memorable single cocktail for the evening.
A note on shipping: spirits are Kentucky-only. If you want bourbon for the 4th, local pickup at either Bowling Green or Paducah is the way. Please drink responsibly -- pace pours over food, keep water on the table, and have a driver plan before anyone opens a bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions
What wine goes with 4th of July BBQ food?
For burgers, brisket, ribs, and pulled pork, Black and Bruised (our flagship blackberry + Concord blend) is the pour -- tannin cuts fat, fruit meets smoke. For lighter proteins like chicken, go with Killer B's or Peach. For sweet sides and dessert, Cotton Candy or Lauren's Blackberry.
What's a good red-white-and-blue cocktail?
Pour Cotton Candy over ice, add fresh blueberries, top with a splash of chilled lemon-lime sparkling water, and rim with a strawberry. Layered colors, easy to make, cookout-friendly.
Can I ship bourbon for the 4th of July?
No -- spirits are Kentucky-only. We can't ship bourbon out of state. If you want bourbon for the holiday weekend, local pickup at either location is the way. For out-of-state shoppers, our wine ships to 29 states plus DC.
How much wine should I buy for a cookout?
A standard 750 mL bottle pours about five 5-ounce glasses. For a 3-4 hour cookout where wine is one of several drink options, plan roughly 1 bottle for every 2-3 wine-drinking guests. Adjust up only for known wine-heavy groups. Better to run a little short than to over-pour.
Should I chill Black and Bruised?
Yes, lightly -- 15-20 minutes in the fridge before serving is right. In July heat, you can also pour it over a single big ice cube once it's had time to breathe. The tannins and acidity hold up to a little ice without stripping the flavor.
What's a good bourbon for after-dinner sipping?
Our 6 Year Small Batch (approachable, smooth) or Double Oaked 11 Year (premium, more complex) are both easy after-dinner picks. For a single summer cocktail, Peach Whiskey builds a great Peach Old Fashioned or lemonade base. Pace the pours, keep water on the table, and have a driver plan.
